HMAS Kuttabul 80th Anniversary Commemoration - 31 May 2022

The Kuttabul Commemoration Project and the Military History Society of New South Wales are honoured to co-organise this year's 80th anniversary commemoration of the tragic wartime sinking of HMAS Kuttabul.

In the early hours of 1 June 1942 the former ferry was struck by a torpedo fired from a Japanese midget submarine which had entered Sydney Harbour on 31 May, resulting in the loss of nineteen Royal Australian Navy and two Royal Navy sailors. A number of others were wounded.

The Kuttabul Commemoration Project has organised commemoration events on two previous significant anniversaries involving activities similar to the program for Tuesday, 31 May 2022, featuring:
  • A four hour charter tour of Sydney Harbour on board the floating glass ballroom Bella Vista (including buffet menu with additional prawns, DJ and alcoholic beverages).
  • Commentary from expert guide.
  • Laying of poppies into the wreath by descendants of the lost sailors.
  • Wreath-laying ceremony on the water where Kuttabul was lost with exclusive permission from the Royal Australian Navy to enter restricted waters.
  • Royal Australian Navy participation in the ceremony in the form of Navy bugler on the shore.
