Group Visit to the Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering at Holsworthy Barracks, Sunday 19 October 2025

On Sunday, 19 October 2025 a party of Society members visited the magnificent Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering at Holsworthy Barracks in western Sydney. We were granted the privilege of a special guided tour which started off on the upper level along the visual Timeline wall which places events in chronological context from colonial to more recent times. Then we were given access to back-of-office storage and sorting areas containing hundreds of fascinating items from weapons, to uniforms, to maps, to instruments, to flags and to medals, all collected over the historical periods presented on the timeline. We then moved to the lower level where the Ubique Gallery displays many fascinating exhibits relating to wartime engineering across Australian military history. Finally we entered the Large Technology Gallery with its incredible fleet of military engineering vehicles adapted to a variety of battlefield purposes, like bulldozing, repair and maintenance, transport and mine...

Group Visit to Army Museum of NSW, Victoria Barracks, 18 May 2025

As part of our Society's program of group visits to sites of military historical interest, some members visited the Army Museum of New South Wales at Victoria Barracks, Paddington, Sydney on Sunday, 18 May 2025. Parties of members were led on a fascinating tour of the barracks grounds including major buildings like the Main Barrack Block completed in 1846 and the Officers' mess, followed by a tour of the museum itself, which displays many interesting exhibits relating to military aspects of New South Wales from earliest colonial days through to overseas commitments and more recent times. We thank Major Michael Kelly, the Museum Manager, for his time and informative guide work. Bathurst RSL Letter on Bathurst Boer War Memorial - Lt Peter Handcock

Lt Peter Handcock O n Anzac Day this year journalist Peter FitzSimons wrote an article published in the Sydney Morning Herald calling for the removal of the name of Lieutenant Peter Handcock from the Bathurst, New South Wales, Boer War Memorial on the ground that he was a convicted war criminal, for which he was executed by firing squad alongside Lieutenant Harry "Breaker" Morant  in South Africa on 27 February 1902. Handcock was a Bathurst district local. James Unkles is an author, former naval reserve officer, military and civilian lawyer, and campaigner for a pardon for Morant, Handcock and the third convicted man, George Witton. On 30 May 2021 James posted a response to FitzSimons on his website. The response notes that on 4 May 2021 the Bathurst Sub-Branch of the RSL wrote to Bathurst Regional Council, which controls the monument, opposing the removal of any names from the Memorial.
